Are my images uploaded?

No. There is no upload step and no server that could receive the file — the tool runs as code in this browser tab, works on the copy your browser opened, and forgets it when you close the tab. You can check this yourself: open your browser’s network panel and run the tool. You will see the page, its scripts and the ads that pay for the site — and no request carrying your file, because there is no endpoint to carry it to.

Which format should I choose?

WebP for the web — it is smaller than both JPG and PNG and every current browser reads it. AVIF is smaller still but slower to encode and not supported everywhere. JPG for maximum compatibility with older software. PNG when you need transparency or perfectly lossless flat colour.

Why is a format greyed out?

Because this browser cannot encode it. Support for writing AVIF in particular varies between browsers, and rather than silently handing you a PNG with the wrong file extension, the tool checks first and tells you.

What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?

JPG has no transparency, so see-through pixels need a colour behind them. The tool asks you which one instead of defaulting to black, which is what a naive conversion produces.
